Skype

Skype is software you can download that allows users to make voice and video phone calls over the Internet. Skype to Skype calls and video calling are free. If you want to call a landline or mobile phone, you pay a small fee.
There are about a billion additional feature that make this tool even niftier: conference calls (more than one person and it's free if you're all on skype), voicemail, call forwarding, instant messaging, file sharing, your own online phone number (so anyone can call you at your computer number), screen sharing (let others see your screen while you're talking to them so you can do a walk through of something), and even text messaging! If you don't already have this tool in your backpack, it's past time.

Where do I sign up?

Right here!

Jeffery Chen, from our class, wrote a great tutorial on how to get started.

How has our class used Skype?

Kurt Witt and a group of fellow students have used Skype to chat with missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to organize a meeting explaining how to share the Church's gospel message using online tools. He wrote about the experience here.

Rhett Ferrin wrote about some of the important social impacts of Skype on his own and others' lives.

Erin Hamson writes about some amazing uses for Skype, including keeping military families in touch, with free overseas communication.

Enos Ladezma used Skype to call a cousin in Mexico.
